Hawks edge Bears in doubleheader

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.- SUNY New Paltz (11-13, 4-0 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam softball team (7-16, 1-7) 2-0 and 4-1 in a Thursday doubleheader.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • The scoring started early for the Hawks with a run in the bottom of the first on a ground out from first baseman Ella Sharrock.
  • The Bears held strong through the next three innings, not allowing a run.
  • The Hawks were able to secure another run in the bottom of the fifth on a double from centerfielder Jackie Rometo to bring home second baseman Lauren Serrao.
  • The Bears were unable to battle back in the sixth and seventh innings with the Hawks winning 2-0.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1)
  • Senior pitcher Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) (4-8) pitched for six innings allowing two runs off three hits with three strikeouts.
  • Sydney Waldon (5-7) pitched for seven innings, not allowing any runs on two hits with seven strikeouts for the Hawks.
  • Junior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) and senior second baseman Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) each had a hit for the Bears.
  • Rometo and Sharrock were each 1-for-3 with a run for New Paltz.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • There was no scoring through the first three innings of the finale.
  • The Bears struck first in the top of the fourth on a single from senior third baseman Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) to drive in Cottrill.
  • With the bases loaded, the Hawks were able to battle back and take the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Catcher Mallory Rohon doubled in left fielder Kelsey O'Brien and Rometo to make it 2-1. Soon after, the Hawks had another double from shortstop Maddie Anderson. Pinch runner Kate Hope and Sharrock scored to make it 4-1.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
  • Freshman pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) (3-8) pitched for four and a third innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and two strikeouts.
  • Cottrill pitched the final 1.2 scoring innings, striking out one.
  • Leah Gunsett (5-5) went all seven innings for the Hawks, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts.
  • Cottrill was 2-for-3 with a run at the plate.
  • Sharrock was 2-for-2 with one run, while Rohon and right fielder Lindsey Serrao were each 1-for-3 with two RBI.
  • With her two hits today, Dobransky now has 116 for her career. She is just one behind Dana Vollmuth '11 for third place on the Bears' all-time list.

The Bears head to SUNY Oneonta tomorrow afternoon for another twin bill beginning at 3 p.m.
