Dragons take two from Bears

ONEONTA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (7-18, 1-9 SUNYAC) bowed to SUNY Oneonta (12-12, 6-2 SUNYAC) 9-2 and 7-3 in a road doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
 
WHAT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • The Bears started the scoring in the fourth inning off a two-run error. Graduate student catcher Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) and junior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) both came in to score.
  • The Red Dragons scored one run in the bottom of the fourth from a single by right fielder Tatum Passonno to bring home catcher Julia Serena.
  • Oneonta exploded in the bottom of the sixth with eight runs to seal the victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS-
  • Senior pitcher Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) (4-9) allowed nine runs, just three earned, off 11 hits and three strikeouts.
  • Tanner Smith (4-3) went the distance for the Red Dragons, allowing two unearned runs on just four hits and four strikeouts.
  • Bennett was 2-for-3 with a run.
  • Serena was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for Oneonta.
 
WHAT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • The Red Dragons scored four runs on three hits and two errors in the bottom of the second in game two. Passonno had an RBI single.
  • The Bears countered with three runs on two hits and an error in the top of the sixth to close within 4-3.  Bennett drove in the first run with a single to right. Senior third baseman Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) brought in the second run with a sacrifice bunt. Senior designated player Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./North Collins) added an RBI single and the Bears were down just one.
  • The Red Dragons put the game away with three runs on two RBI singles and a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth to close the scoring.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
  • Freshman pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) (3-9) allowed six earned runs on 10 hits with one strikeout.
  • Senior second baseman Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) was 1-for-4. The hit was the 117th of her career tying her for third on the program's all-time list.
  • Emily Brown (7-5) allowed two unearned runs on four hits and seven strikeouts for the Red Dragons.
  • Shortstop Ava Thys was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI for Oneonta.
  • Passonno finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
 
WHATS NEXT?
The Bears head to SUNY Delhi in a nonconference twin bill on Tuesday. The games are scheduled for 3 and 5 p.m.
