Blue Devils overpower Bears

FREDONIA, N.Y.—SUNY Fredonia (8-6, 3-3 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (5-7, 0-6) 16-8 on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The contest was tied 3-3 after one quarter. Freshman attack Jayla Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) scored twice and junior attack Megan MacWilliams (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) had the other goal.
  • The Blue Devils started the second quarter on a 6-0 run before Thompson struck with 1:18 left in the second quarter. Fredonia led 9-4 at the half.
  • Fredonia edged the Bears 4-3 in the third quarter. Graduate student midfielder Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena), MacWilliams and senior midfielder Tessa Pierce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) each scored in the third. It was 13-7 after 45 minutes.
  • MacWilliams scored to open the fourth quarter and get the Bears within five. However, the Blue Devils pulled away after the goal for the 16-8 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Thompson and MacWilliams each scored three goals for the Bears.
  • Pierce and LaDue each recorded a goal and an assist.
  • Freshman goalie Kimora Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made five saves for Potsdam.
  • Emma Cockerel led Fredonia with four goals and two assists.
  • Sydney Buchko added four goals and an assist for the hosts.
  • Ashleigh Manns stopped nine shots to earn the win.
