POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (5-8, 0-7 SUNYAC) gave first place Oswego State (11-2, 7-0) all they could handle, but the Lakers escaped with a 13-12 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears scored three of the contests first four goals, but the Lakers led 5-4 after one quarter. Freshman attack Jayla Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) scored three times and junior attack Megan MacWilliams (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) had the other goal.
- Oswego sophomore midfielder Cassidy Croce (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Croton-Harmon) scored the only three goals of the second quarter and the Lakers took an 8-4 lead into the half.
- Senior midfielder Mallory Marks (Brownville, N.Y./General Brown) opened the scoring in the second half on a perfect feed from graduate student midfielder Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) opened the scoring in the third quarter. Oswego answered with three for their biggest lead of the contest at 11-5. Senior midfielder Tessa Pierce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) scored a man-up goal with 3:02 left and the Bears trailed by five after 45 minutes.
- LaDue scored two in a row to open the fourth quarter, the second coming on an assist from Marks, and Potsdam was down 11-8 with 11:25 to play.
- Oswego scored two of the next three goals for a 13-9 advantage at 7:18.
- LaDue struck again at 4:04 and Thompson followed at 3:28 and 1:07 to make it a 13-12 contest. However, the Lakers claimed the ensuing draw control and ran out the clock.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- LaDue finished with six points on three goals and three assists. LaDue now has 187 career points on 137 goals and 50 assists. She ranks fourth in points and goals and sixth in assists.
- Thompson scored a contest-best five goals.
- Pierce had two goals, one assist and four draw controls
- Freshman goalie Kimora Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made 11 saves and recorded the 100th of her career early in the second half.
- Croce and junior midfielder Alexis Hill (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor) each scored four goals for the Lakers.
- Junior goalie Alana Iacovissi (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) stopped two shots while picking up the win.
