POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (7-8, 2-7 SUNYAC) held off Plattsburgh State (3-12, 1-8) 9-7 in the season finale on Wednesday afternoon. Graduate student midfielder
Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) led the Bears with three goals and an assist. The efforts sets the program single-season scoring record with 79 points on 51 goals and 28 assists. LaDue finishes her career with the program record 148 goals. She is tied for third on the all-time scoring list with 201 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- LaDue opened the scoring with a goal at 10:56. The Cardinals followed with the next two and led 2-1 after one quarter.
- After another Plattsburgh goal, Potsdam scored five of the next seven markers for a 6-5 halftime edge. Freshman attack Jayla Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y./Massena) scored twice and senior midfielder Tessa Pierce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), LaDue and junior attack Megan MacWilliams (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) had the others.
- The teams each scored two goals in the third quarter, with Potsdam's coming from Pierce and LaDue. It was 8-7 Bears through 45 minutes.
- LaDue set up Thompson for the only goal of the fourth quarter and closed out the scoring at 7:45.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Thompson finished with three goals.
- Pierce had two goals, an assist, four caused turnovers and three draw controls.
- MacWilliams chipped in a goal and an assist.
- Freshman goalie Kimora Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made 14 saves to earn the win.
- Junior attack Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) paced the Cardinals offensively with four goals and three ground balls.
- Graduate student goalie Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev./North American Hockey Academy) was also outstanding between the sticks with 18 saves.
SEASON WRAP UP
- The victory was the seventh of the season for the Bears, matching the program's single season record in first year head coach Lindsey Pound's debut campaign.
- The Bears won a record five contests in a row to start the season.
- The win ends a five-game skid against the Cardinals.
- LaDue also finished as the program's leader in ground balls (184) and caused turnovers (99). She was sixth in draw controls (179) and assists.
- Senior midfielder Mallory Marks (Brownville, N.Y./General Brown) closes her career ranked third in draw controls (184), 18th in scoring (70g, 18a, 88pts), 14th in goals, 19th in assists, 20th in ground balls (90) and 17th in caused turnovers (37).
- Pierce is third in caused turnovers (80), fifth in draw controls (183), ninth in ground balls (129), 18th in scoring (65g, 20a, 85pts), 16th in goals and 17th in assists.
