POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (13-18, 5-9 SUNYAC) steamrolled SUNY Canton (0-25, 0-8) in both ends of a doubleheader to extend its winning streak to six games. The Bears won game one 16-1 and took game two 11-3. The second win was the Bears' fifth in conference play, matching the program's single-season record. Senior pitcher
Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) won the opener, her seventh victory of the season, tying her for the single-season mark with Ashley Thayer-Keenan '13.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
- The Bears scored seven runs on three hits and four walks in the bottom of the first. Junior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) had a two-run double to cap the rally.
- The Bears added another run in the second and four more in the third. Rosick, Cottrill and senior third baseman Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) each had RBI singles in the third and graduate student catcher Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) added a sacrifice fly.
- Potsdam tacked on four more runs in the fourth. Senior second baseman Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science & Innovation), Cottrill, Bennett and senior center fielder Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) each had RBIs, with Bennett recording a double.
- Canton got its lone run in the top of the fifth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1)
- Cottrill (7-9) didn't allow an earned run on just three hits, while striking out seven Kangaroos. The win was the 16th of her career, just one shy of second place on the program's all-time list.
- Rosick was a perfect four-for-four with three runs and three RBI.
- Cottrill was 2-for-2 with two walks, three runs and two RBI.
- LaForest was also 2-for-2 with a run and two RBI.
- Dobransky was 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.
- Sophomore pitcher Ace Rogers (0-16) allowed 13 earned runs on 13 hits and five walks for Canton.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
- The Roos scored twice in the first inning on an RBI single from freshman first baseman Ava Hayes (Sauquoit, N.Y./Madrid-Waddington) and a wild pitch.
- Potsdam grabbed the lead in the bottom first with three runs. Rosick scored on an error in the bottom of the first and Bennett followed on a wild pitch to tie the game. Moscarello put the Bears up 3-2 with an RBI single.
- Freshman third baseman Rylynn Martin-McIntyre (Gouverneur, N.Y./Gouverneur) scored on an error in the top of the second to get Canton even for a final time.
- The Bears took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. LaForest and freshman pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) had RBI singles and Moscarello drove in a run on a ground out.
- Potsdam added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. LaForest walked it off with an RBI double to close the scoring at 11-3.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
- Horne (6-9) allowed just two earned runs on four hits, while striking out two.
- Cottrill closed her big day by going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored.
- Senior left fielder Kiara Lovejoy (Lansing, N.Y./Lansing) was 3-for-3 with two runs.
- LaForest went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
- Rosick finished 2-for-4 with two runs.
- Rogers (0-17) pitched the second game for Canton as well, allowing just four earned runs on 13 hits.
- Hayes led the Roos, going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
SENIOR DAY
- In between the contests, the Bears honored seniors Dobransky, Bennett, Lovejoy, Cottrill, Moscarello, LaForest and Bailey Traynor (North Bangor, N.Y./Brushton-Moira) for there careers on Senior Day.
