SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (14-19) won the first game of a doubleheader at Union College (10-18) before falling in game two. The victory was the Bears' seventh in a row, extending the program record. It was also the 14th of the season, matching the Bears single-season wins mark. Senior pitcher
Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) won her eighth decision of the spring, setting a new mark for the program.
WHAT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
- Potsdam opened the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI single from senior third baseman Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) that brought in junior shortstop Alexys Rosick (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls).
- Union battled back with three runs scored in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly, wild pitch and an RBI single to grab a 3-1 lead.
- The Bears got a run back in the top of the third on another RBI single from LaForest.
- They broke out for five runs on five hits in the top of the fourth to go up 7-3. Rosick had an RBI single and Cottrill helped her own cause with a two-run double.
- Center fielder Rylee Callahan and first baseman Kyla Springer got the Garnet Chargers within 7-5 with an RBI single each in the bottom of the fourth.
- Potsdam countered with four more runs on four hits in the top of the fifth to go up 11-5. Rosick added a two-run double and Cottrill and senior center fielder Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) contributed run-scoring singles.
- Union got to within 11-7 on a two-run single from Springer in the bottom of the sixth.
- The Bears put the game away the top of the seventh with RBI singles from Cottrill and freshman first baseman Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) to close the scoring at 13-7.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Cottrill (8-9) went the distance for Potsdam, allowing four earned runs on 13 hits. She led the Bears at the plate as well, going 3-for-5 with a run and four RBI.
- Rosick was 3-for-5 with four runs and three RBI and senior left fielder Kiara Lovejoy (Lansing, N.Y./Lansing) went 3-for-4 with two runs.
- LaForest finished 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.
- Potsdam's 19 hits were the second most by a Bears team in a single game.
- Melody Kappel (2-10) allowed nine earned runs on 19 hits with three strikeouts.
- Shortstop Sam Rose was 4-for-5 with two runs for Union and Springer went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
WHAT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
- The Chargers brought the Bears momentum to a halt in game two, registering a 9-0 no-hit victory.
- Union scored seven runs on eight hits in the bottom of the first.
- They added two more runs on a ground out and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Freshman pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) (6-10) pitched for four innings allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits.
- Potsdam couldn't solve freshman pitcher Carra Cleaves (6-6) who struck out six and didn't allow a hit.
- Second baseman Elle Wintringer led Union, going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
