Bears swept at Cortland, Dobransky climbs to second on hits list

CORTLAND, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (14-21, 5-11 SUNYAC) was swept in a doubleheader with SUNY Cortland (18-14, 14-2) on Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons won 8-0 and 14-6 decisions.
 
WHAT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • The Red Dragons started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on an error. Cortland got one more run in the inning on a double down left field line by second baseman Maggie Cummings.
  • Cortland added two more runs on two hits in the bottom of the third. Wright scored again and pitcher McKenna Barry homered to give the Red Dragons a 4-0 lead.
  • Cortland put the game away with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth to extend its lead 7-0.
  • The Red Dragons walked off in the sixth with an RBI single from third baseman Laila Smith for the 8-0 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Senior pitcher Lexi Cottrill (8-10) (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) threw for five innings, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits with one strikeout. She was also 1-for-3 at the plate.
  • Barry (8-5) went the distance for Cortland, allowing just three hits while striking out five. She also led the Red Dragons offensively, going 3-for-3 with 2 runs and an RBI.
  • Wright finished 2-for-2 with three runs and two walks.
 
WHAT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • Cortland scored three times in the first two innings in game two. Wright scored in the first and doubled to left in the second to drive in two more.
  • Senior second baseman Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) scored on an error in the top of the third to make it 3-1.
  • The Red Dragons scored four runs in the bottom of the third and one run in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 8-1.
  • The Bears scored five runs on four hits in the top of the sixth to get within 8-6. Senior center fielder Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) scored on an error. Dobransky drove in two more with a single to center. Cottrill followed with a two-run double to close the gap to two.
  • Cortland answered those five runs with six of its own on five hits in the bottom of the sixth to close out the 14-6 victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Freshman pitcher Sam Horne (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) (6-11) tossed 5.1 innings, allowing six earned runs on 15 hits with one strikeout.
  • Dobransky led the Bears going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
  • Moscarello was 2-for-3 with a run.
  • Red Dragons pitcher Gianna Endieveri threw the first three innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits with one strikeout.
  • Reliever Molly Farley (2-2) was touched up for five runs, four earned, on three hits and three walks in 2.1 innings.
  • Sophia Wahl picked up her second save after allowing one hit in the last 0.2 innings to close out the game for the Red Dragons.
  • Wright finished the contest 4-for-5 with two runs and five RBI. Cummings went 2-for-3 with three runs. Shortstop Kaeli McAnally was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
 
KAYLEE DOBRANSKY
  • With her two hits today, Dobransky passes hall of famer Brooke Falsion-Mitchell'19 on the program's all-time hits list. The second baseman now ranks second in the category with 129. She is also tied four fourth in runs-batted-in with 59.
 
WHATS NEXT?
The Bears head to Morrisville State tomorrow to wrap up the regular season with another doubleheader beginning at noon.
