POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (6-4, 2-1 SUNYAC) pulled away from Morrisville State (1-6, 0-3) for a 14-7 victory on Wednesday afternoon. Senior attackman
Cobie Cree (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) scored twice, including the 100th goal of his career.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Potsdam scored the first six goals of the contest, including the only four of the first quarter. Senior midfielder Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) opened the scoring off a feed from senior midfielder Owen Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) at 12:37. Cree scored next and then set up a marker from freshman midfielder Sebastien Laughing (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River). Rose set up a goal from sophomore midfielder Braden Fahey (Halfmoon, N.Y./Shenendehowa) to make it 4-0.
- Walsh and Rose extended the lead to 6-0 just 3:50 into the second quarter. Senior midfielder Ryan Hughes (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) got Potsdam's other goal and the Bears led 7-3 at the break.
- After another Morrisville goal, Laughing set up back-to-back goals from Cree and junior captain Jakob Lynch (Alexandria Bay, N.Y./Alexandria). Potsdam was up 9-5 through 45 minutes.
- The Bears outscored Morrisville 5-2 in the fourth quarter to close out the 14-7 win. Hughes scored twice. Junior defender Tommy Storrin (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central), freshman midfielder Kyan Combs (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) and Walsh added the final tallies.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Cree finished with four points on two goals and two assists along with four ground balls.
- Hughes had three markers and two ground balls.
- Walsh and Rose each had two goals and an assist and Laughing had a goal and two assists.
- Junior faceoff specialist Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) won 17 of his 24 attempts and collected six ground balls.
- Junior goalie Saka Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) made a season-high 20 saves for his 15th career victory. The win ties him for third on the program's all-time list.
- Mustangs sophomore goalie Blake Dunton (Middlesex, N.Y./Marcus Whitman) also had an impressive day, turning aside 19 shots.
- Morrisville junior attackman Jason Tedeschi (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) led all scorers with five points on three goals and two assists.
