Plattsburgh rallies to down Bears in first round of Cardinal Classic, 3-2

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (0-1) held a 2-0 advantage before Plattsburgh State (1-0) clawed its way back for a 3-2 win in the first round of the Cardinal Classic on Friday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears raced out to a 15-6 lead in set one, before downing the Cards 25-17. Freshman outside hitter Ashlee Hagerman (Kirkwood, N.Y./Kirkwood) had five kills in the set and junior outside hitter Emily Prest added another three.
  • Set two was tighter, but Potsdam claimed the 25-20 win. Hagerman added another five kills and four other Bears had two apiece.
  • The Cardinals scored the final five points of third set to rebound for a 25-21 victory. Hagerman added six more kills in the set and freshman middle hitter Logan Georgia (Oswego, N.Y./Owego) contributed four.
  • It was all Plattsburgh in the fourth set as the Cardinals evened the match with a 25-12 win.
  • The Bears trailed in the fifth set until a four-point burst tied the score at 12 apiece. However, Plattsburgh took three of the final four points to earn the 15-13 decision and the match win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Hagerman led the Bears with 19 kills and 13 digs in her collegiate debut. Prest finished with eight kills and three aces. Georgia had seven kills and junior middle hitter Noelle Redeye (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Silver Creek) chipped in six and three blocks.
  • Senior captain Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) had 34 kills and four digs.
  • Junior setter Rachel Madore (Peru, N.Y./Peru) recorded 15 digs and junior defensive specialist Madison Gilliland (Rossville, Ga./Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe) had three aces and four digs.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears look to bounce back with two matches in Plattsburgh tomorrow. They face Russell Sage College at 11 a.m. and SUNY Delhi at 3 p.m.
