Bears bow to Gators, sweep Broncos on final day of Cardinal Classic

The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (1-2) fell to Russell Sage College (2-1) by a 3-1 score before recovering to sweep SUNY Delhi (0-2) 3-0 on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (RUSSELL SAGE)
  • The Gators used a 7-0 run to grab the lead early in set one and while the Bears chipped away, Sage held on for a 25-20 win. Freshman outside hitter Ashlee Hagerman (Kirkwood, N.Y./Kirkwood) and junior outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) each had four kills.
  • A late rally in set two got Potsdam even at 23-23, but the Gators sealed the win with the last two points. Hagerman had three more kills and junior middle hitter Jacqueline Fornabia (Gansevoort, N.Y./Saratoga Central Catholic) added two.
  • The Bears finally broke through in set three, thanks in part to a late 5-0 run, defeating Sage 25-22. Prest had four kills and Hagerman had three more.
  • Potsdam started set four on an 8-5 run, but the Gators came back to slip past for a 25-23 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (RUSSELL SAGE)
  • Hagerman had another strong game with 15 kills, 11 digs, three aces and two blocks. Prest finished with 10 kills, eight digs and three aces.
  • Senior captain Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) contributed 34 assists and 14 digs.
  • Freshman middle hitter Logan Georgia (Owego, N.Y./Oswego) had six kills and freshman outside hitter Maggie Paluch (Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) also chipped in three aces.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (DELHI)
  • The Bears jumped out to a 6-3 lead in set one, before a Bronco rally. Potsdam then put Delhi away with a 10-3 run for a 25-19 final. Hagerman had six kills and junior middle hitter Noelle Redeye (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Silver Creek) added three.
  • Potsdam raced out to a 15-5 lead in set two before putting the Broncos away 25-17. Hagerman posted another six kills.
  • Set three was a see-saw battle, but the Bears outlasted Delhi 26-24. Prest had four kills and Hagerman three.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (DELHI)
  • Hagerman wrapped up her first collegiate weekend with 14 kills. Prest had eight kills, 14 digs and four aces. Logan registered four kills and three blocks.
  • Layer totaled 27 assists, seven digs, two aces and a block.
  • Junior setter Rachel Madore (Peru, N.Y./Peru) contributed 10 digs and two assists.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday night when they host Paul Smith's College at 5 p.m. in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
