Bears trap Bobcats in home opener, 3-1

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (2-2) defeated Paul Smith's College (0-1) 3-1 on Wednesday night in the Bears' home opener.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was all Potsdam in set one, with the Bears claiming a 25-10 win. Junior middle hitter Noelle Redeye (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Silver Creek) had five kills, while junior outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) and freshman outside hitter Ashlee Hagerman (Kirkwood, N.Y./Windsor) had four and three, respectively.
  • The Bobcats finished set two on a 5-2 run to grab a 25-20 win. Freshman outside hitter Raven Sessoms (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./AuSable Valley) had four kills for Potsdam and junior middle hitter Jacqueline Fornabia (Gansevoort, N.Y./Saratoga Central Catholic) added three.
  • The Bears then closed out the match with identical 25-12 wins in sets three and four. Prest registered four kills in set three and Hagerman had three. Freshman middle hitter Logan Georgia (Owego, N.Y./Owego) led the way in set four with five kills and Hagerman had another four.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Prest and Hagerman each had 10 kills, while Georgia finished with eight. Hagerman also had five aces and seven digs. Prest had four aces and eight digs.
  • Senior captain Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) contributed 31 assists, six digs and two aces. Freshman setter Julia Holmes (Blossvale, N.Y./Camden) posted eight assists and junior setter Gabriella Luna (Schenectady, N.Y./Mekeel Christian Academy) chipped in five.
  • Redeye, junior outside hitter Ella Murtagh (Massena, N.Y./Massena) and junior outside hitter Sarah Ruffos (Parish, N.Y./Altmar-Parish-Williamstown) each had a block.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears are back in action on Saturday at SUNY Poly with two matches. They face the host Wildcats at 11 a.m. followed by a neutral site match with Purchase at 1 p.m.
