Bears rally past Wildcats, sweep Panthers

UTICA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (4-2) defeated both SUNY Poly (3-3) and SUNY Purchase (0-3) in a Saturday tri-match in Utica.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (SUNY POLY)
  • The Wildcats used a 5-0 run to escape with a 26-24 set one victory over the Bears. Freshman outside hitter Ashlee Hagerman (Kirkwood, N.Y./Windsor) recorded six kills.
  • SUNY Poly rolled to a 2-0 lead in set two with a 25-14 win. Hagerman added another four kills and junior middle hitter Noelle Redeye (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Silver Creek) had two.
  • The Bears bounced back with a 25-16 win in set three, finishing the Wildcats with a 6-1 run. Hagerman and freshman middle hitter Logan Georgia (Owego, N.Y./Oswego) each had four kills.
  • The Bears raced out to an 11-3 lead and evened the match with a 25-11 set four win. Junior outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) totaled five kills and Hagerman added four.
  • Potsdam pulled away in a tight set five with a 5-1 run to claim a 15-11 victory and the match.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (SUNY POLY)
  • Hagerman had a career-high 23 kills and 19 digs. Prest registered 13 kills, 18 digs and two aces. Georgia recorded eight kills and three blocks.
  • Senior captain Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) posted 40 assists, three blocks and two aces.
  • Junior setter Rachel Madore (Peru, N.Y./Peru) matched a career-high with 20 digs.
  • Potsdam is now 35-4 in the all-time series with the Wildcats.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (PURCHASE)
  • The Bears flattened the Panthers in the opening set of the later game, 25-8. Prest and Hagerman each had three kills.
  • Potsdam outlasted Purchase 25-18 in the second set to go up 2-0. Hagerman had four kills.
  • The Bears opened up a 15-6 lead en route to a 25-16 win to complete the sweep. Redeye had three kills and Madore chipped in two.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (PURCHASE)
  • Hagerman finished with another seven digs and 2 aces, while Prest and Redeye each had four.
  • Sophomore setter Meredith Harnden (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) had a career-high 16 assists and an ace.
  • Layer had nine digs, while freshman libero Carli Knapp (Lovington, N.M./Lovington) totaled seven and Madore five.
  • Freshman outside hitter Maggie Paluch (Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) contributed a match best four aces.
  • The contest was the first ever meeting between the two programs.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears are back in action next Friday, when they host a doubleheader with Hilbert College. The matches are scheduled for 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.
