Bears rally to down Wolves, 3-2

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Keuka College (0-3) scored early on a direct kick, but the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (4-0-1) rallied for a 3-2 win to stay undefeated on Wednesday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman midfielder Evan Simmons (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) ripped a rising line drive off a direct kick into the top of the net at 13:00 to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.
  • Sophomore forward Thomas Wendel (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) headed home a long kick to tie the game at 24:29 with his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Junior defender Matthew Mapes (Fort Drum, N.Y./Carthage) had the assist.
  • In the 35th minute, Keuka was called for a handball in the box. Sophomore midfielder Cristiano Lozier (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) deposited the ensuing penalty kick into the right corner of the net to make it 2-1 Potsdam.
  • The Bears outshot the Wolves 16-3 in the first half.
  • Senior midfielder Liam Davis (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover) got the Wolves even at 75:08, knocking home a loose ball in front.
  • At 82:56, freshman midfielder Neptaly Castro (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) netted his first collegiate goal and the game-winner, evading Keuka freshman goalie Logan Karn (Caledonia, N.Y./Caledonia-Mumford). Wendel and Lozier assisted on the goal.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Potsdam outshot Keuka 28-5 and had an 8-3 advantage in corners.
  • Senior goalie Ian Schwartz (Amsterdam, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth) made one save for his seventh career victory.
  • Karn stopped seven shots for the Wolves.
  • The Bears are now 4-2-3 in the all-time series with Keuka dating back to 1995.
  • At 4-0-1, Potsdam is off to its best start since 2016.
