Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Spartans edge Bears, 1-0

CASTLETON, VT.—Vermont State-Castleton (3-3) scored in the second half to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (4-1-1) 1-0 on Monday evening. The loss was the first of the season for the Bears.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The scoreless first half was a defensive battle with the Bears outshooting the Spartans 4-2. Sophomore goalkeeper James Kelm (Chester, N.Y./Chester Academy) stopped the only shot that came his way. Castleton goalie Xander Berthiaume made three saves.
  • Michael O'Connor struck at the 59:22 mark off a corner kick to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
  • The Bears had a final chance to tie with just over two minutes to go, but the attempt sailed high.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Castleton outshot the Bears 8-7, but Potsdam had a 5-3 edge in corners.
  • Kelm finished with five saves and Berthiaume completed his shutout with four stops.
  • The Spartans now lead the all-time series 4-1-1, dating back to 2010.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday when they head to Canton to take on St. Lawrence University at 4:30 p.m.
