Bears conquer Spartans, fall to Saints

CANTON, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (7-5) defeated Vermont State Castleton (6-6) 3-1 before falling to St. Lawrence University (8-4) by the same score at the SLU Tri-Match on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (CASTLETON)
  • The Bears opened set one on an 11-5 run, but the Spartans rallied to tie the contest before Potsdam escaped 28-26. Junior outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) had five kills and freshman outside hitter Ashlee Hagerman (Kirkwood, N.Y./Windsor) added four.
  • Potsdam crushed Castleton 25-11 in the second set. Hagerman led the way with four kills, while freshman middle hitter Logan Georgia (Owego, N.Y./Owego) had three and Prest chipped in two.
  • The Spartans rallied in the third set, getting off to a 12-5 start and hanging on to a 25-21 win. Georgia and Prest had three kills each, while Hagerman and junior middle hitter Noelle Redeye (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Silver Creek) each had two.
  • The Bears answered with another overpowering victory in set four, winning 25-11 to take the match. Hagerman had four kills and four consecutive aces to help the Bears pull away.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (CASTLETON)
  • Hagerman finished with 15 kills and career-highs with eight aces and 22 digs. Prest recorded 11 kills, two aces and 13 digs. Georgia nearly matched a personal best with seven kills.
  • Senior captain Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) contributed 34 assists and junior setter Rachel Madore (Peru, N.Y./Peru) totaled 20 digs and along with four assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (SLU)
  • The host Saints used a late run to pull away from the Bears in set one for a 25-17 win. Prest had four kills and Georgia had two.
  • Potsdam started set two 15-7 and went on to a 25-16 win to even the match. Hagerman registered four kills, Layer had three and Redeye and Prest each had two.
  • SLU ran away with set three, 25-12. Prest had two kills.
  • The Saints put the match away with a run midway through the fourth set, winning 25-18. Hagerman added five more kills to her total and Prest had three.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (SLU)
  • Hagerman had 11 kills and an ace. Prest totaled 10 kills, eight digs and three assists.
  • Layer had 21 assists, four kills and an ace.
  • Madore posted 11 digs and Junior defensive specialist Olivia Eves (Chaumont, N.Y./General Brown) had eight.
  • Redeye and junior middle hitter Jacqueline Fornabia (Gansevoort, N.Y./Saratoga Central Catholic) each contributed two blocks.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears are off until Tuesday, September 30, when they travel to Plattsburgh State to open SUNYAC play at 6 p.m.
