POTSDAM, N.Y.—In the first round of the Potsdam College Cup, the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (3-0) defeated SUNY ESF (1-1) 3-1. Nazareth University (1-0-1) and Baruch College (0-1-1) battled to a scoreless draw in the early game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears jumped out in front at 11:32 as sophomore midfielder Kyan Tiede (Leicester, N.Y./York) launched a feed from freshman midfielder Neptaly Castro (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) into the top of the net from the left side of the box.
- Potsdam outshot ESF 9-4 in the first half and had seven corners to the Mighty Oakes' two.
- Neptaly picked up his second assist at 60:00, finding junior midfielder Jake Trubia (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) in stride. Trubia beat his defender and deposited the ball in the right corner of the net to make it 2-0.
- ESF junior forward Matt D'Addario got the Mighty Oaks on the board at 77:26 to close the gap to one.
- At 84:57, Tiede stole the ball at midfield and sent a long pass ahead to sophomore forward Logan Bush (Newcomb, N.Y./Newcomb). Bush ripped it past Might Oaks goalie Sam Tymeson (Mechanicville) to seal the win at 3-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Tiede and Bush's goals were the third of their careers, Trubia's was his fourth and Castro's two assists were the first points of his career.
- Bears senior goalie Ian Schwartz (Amsterdam, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth) stopped three shots for his sixth career win.
- Tymeson made four saves.
BARUCH VS. NAZARETH
In the early game, Nazareth outshot Baruch 14-6 and had an 8-3 advantage in corners, but the game ended in a 0-0 draw. Freshman goalie Dzmitry Piatrashka (Staten Island, N.Y./CSI H.S. for International Studies) made six saves for Baruch and freshman goalie Bryan Tirado (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) stopped three shots for Nazareth.
