POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (3-0-1) trailed at halftime, but found the equalizer to tie Baruch College (0-1-2) 1-1 in Potsdam College Cup finale.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bearcats broke through first at 19:01 as freshman midfielder Sardor Abidov (Brooklyn, N.Y./Leaders) drove home a feed from sophomore midfielder Samuel Jacobs (Hastings on Hudson, N.Y./Hastings). Freshman forward Kenneth Perry (New York, N.Y./Baruch College Campus) started the play with a pass from the right side of the net and earned the second assist.
- The Bears generated several strong scoring chances in the first half and outshot Baruch 8-5, but couldn't break through.
- Potsdam got even at 56:37 as sophomore forward JJ Williams (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) stole the ball in the offensive third. He raced down the left side and fed sophomore forward Thomas Wendel (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville), who chipped the ball into the top of the net.
- The second half became increasingly physical, featuring a red card and numerous yellows, but the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Baruch edged the Potsdam in shots, 13-12, but the Bears finished with a 6-5 advantage in corners.
- Sophomore goalie James Kelm (Chester, N.Y./Chester Academy) made three saves for the Bears.
- Bearcats freshman goalie Dzmitry Piatrashka (Staten Island, N.Y./CSI H.S. for International Studies) stopped five shots.
- The Bears are now 3-0-1 in four meetings with the Bearcats in the all-time series dating back to 2011.
NAZARETH-ESF
The Golden Flyers scored two goals in the first half and four in the second to defeat the Might Oaks 6-0 in the early game. Nazareth junior forward Spencer Neil (Vancouver, British Columbia/West Point Grey Academy) scored two goals and four other Golden Flyers also found the back of the net. Nazareth freshman goalie Brian Tirado (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) made one save for the shutout. ESF sophomore keeper Sam Tymeson (Mechanicville, N.Y.) allowed four goals and made 12 saves in the first 75:29. Fellow sophomore goalie Kyle Held (Hamburg, N.Y.) allowed two goals and made two stops in the final 14:31.
