Canton holds off Potsdam, 89-87

CANTON, N.Y.—SUNY Canton (2-10, 1-4 SUNYAC) used a late 3-pointer to edge the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-10, 1-3) 89-87 on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Canton started the contest on a 9-2 run and had its biggest lead of 32-21 with 6:36 left in the half.
  • The Bears then used a 16-3 run, powered by 10 points from junior captain Ethan Baksh (Queens, N.Y./Richmond Hill) to grab a 37-35 lead at 2:19.
  • The Kangaroos countered and led 45-42 at the break.
  • An 8-0 run to start the second half, put Potsdam up 50-45 at 15:42. Senior guard Jaylen Singh (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Rockvale) had four of the points.
  • Canton finally regained the lead, 59-57 at 11:49 and held it until under a minute to go.
  • Trailing 80-71 at the 4:00 mark, the Bears went on a final 17-5 run to capture an 87-85 edge. Baksh hit two free throws for the lead.
  • However, Canton responded with a Malaki Smith three to regain the lead for good with 29 seconds remaining.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears shot 43.3-percent from the floor to the Roos' 42.6.
  • Potsdam also outrebounded Canton 46-42.
  • Baksh finished with a career-high 26 points and added 11 boards to complete his first double-double.
  • Sophomore guard Mike Hancock (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) also had a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double.
  • Freshman guard Bobby Kemokai (New Brunswick, N.J./Plattsburgh) scored a personal-best 14 points as well.
  • Edram Gbekou scored 23 points to lead Canton.

The Bears head to Plattsburgh State on Tuesday night for a 7:30 p.m. battle.
