Roos pull away from Potsdam

CANTON, N.Y.—SUNY Canton (11-1, 4-1 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (2-9, 1-3) 88-67 on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter was an offensive show, with the Kangaroos edging the Bears 25-24. Potsdam led 20-13 at 4:35 before a 12-4 finish put Canton back in front. Senior forward DaeLynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) and graduate student guard Xy'El Bradford (Syracuse, N.Y./Syracuse Academy of Science) did all their damage from the free-throw line, hitting seven and five, respectively. Freshman guard Lucie Scarpine (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore) scored seven points, including a 3-pointer.
  • Canton pulled away with a 27-14 second quarter and led 52-38 at the half. Senior guard Paris Jones (Houston, Texas/Dulles) had five points, including a three, and junior captain Sara Richards (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./AuSable Valley) also scored from long range.
  • The Roos outscored the Bears 15-11 in the third quarter for a 67-49 advantage. Jones had four points in the third and Scarpine added three.
  • The final 10 minutes were also high scoring, with Canton edging Potsdam 21-18. Alcock and Bradford each scored five points and Scarpine hit another three.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Roos shot 44.4-percent from the floor and the Bears hit 30.3-percent.
  • Canton outrebounded Potsdam 57-42.
  • Alcock and Scarpine each led Potsdam with 14 points and seven rebounds.
  • Katie Grainger dominated for the Roos with a double-double of 20 points and 18 rebounds. Sierra Pabo also scored 20 points.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday night when they head to Plattsburgh State for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
