Bears blanked by Thoroughbreds

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Skidmore College (7-6-2, 4-3-1) blanked the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (7-8-0, 4-4-0) 7-0 on Friday evening. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Thoroughbreds netted their first of the game at 3:58 in the first period, courtesy of Ryan Stratton, assisted by Ryan Waltman and Nick Troutwine. 
  • Brandon Spaulding added a second for Skidmore towards the end of the first. Troutwine picked up his second assist, and Bryson Russell recorded his first.
  • Cooper Rice scored the only goal of the second period with assists from Waltman and Jacob Zwirecki, putting the Bears behind 3-0. 
  • Two goals in seven seconds early in the third period saw Potsdam junior goaltender Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) replaced by sophomore Luciano Chinappi (Hilton, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers). 
  • Bryce Terry had Skidmore's fourth goal of the game at 4:57, with Troutwine and Waltman picking up their third assists. Matthew Franzoi scored the fifth at 5:04, assisted by Tyler Chenevert. 
  • The Thoroughbreds scored again at 11:24 in the third through an unassisted goal from Spaulding. 
  • Spaulding then recorded an assist on the seventh and final goal of the game, netted by Oscar Worob. Daniel Urban also picked up an assist. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Thoroughbreds outshot the Bears 38 to 18. 
  • Potsdam was 0-for-2 on the power play. Skidmore was 1-for-4. 
  • Perno made 25 saves and allowed five goals in 45:04 of ice time. Chinappi finished out the game with 11 saves and two goals allowed in 14:56. 
  • The Skidmore goaltending duo of Alex Bonrouhi and Tommy Aitken split the shutout, with Aitken saving 16 shots in 48:02 and Bonrouhi making 2 saves in 11:58. 
  • The contest was the first-ever SUNYAC meeting between the two teams. 

WHAT'S NEXT 
The men's hockey team heads to Plattsburgh tomorrow, taking on the Cardinals at 7 p.m.
