Red Dragons overpower Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y. – SUNY Cortland (12-2, 7-0) overpowered the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (2-11, 1-5) 67-37 on Friday evening in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears fell behind 13-4 in the first half of the opening quarter, spurred by a quick 6-0 Red Dragons run following a three and a half minute scoring drought for both teams. Freshman guard Lucie Scarpine (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore) led Potsdam with seven points as Cortland held the Bears to nine points. The score at the end of the first quarter was 15-9. 
  • Cortland continued to build up its lead, going on a 15-3 run spanning seven minutes in the second quarter. The Bears' largest deficit of the quarter was 18 points, as they were outscored 20-11 overall, going into halftime down 35-20. Freshman guard Olivia Cook (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) recorded six points.
  • Potsdam remained scoreless early in the third quarter until a layup by Cook at 6:13. The Red Dragons stretched their lead to 27 with a five-minute 11-4 run. Senior guard Daelynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) scored four of the Bears' six points in the quarter as it ended 18-6 in favor of Cortland. 
  • The Red Dragons held onto their lead, extending it to 30 points early in the fourth quarter. An opening 3-pointer from Scarpine put her in double digits, and she finished the game leading all scorers with 13 points. Alcock was the only other Bear in double digits with 11. In the closest quarter of the game, Potsdam was outscored 14-11, falling to the Red Dragons 67-37. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Cortland shot 44.6-percent from the field. Potsdam shot 25.5-percent.
  • The Bears were outrebounded 51-19. 
  • Potsdam had nine steals, and Cortland had five. 
  • Scarpine led the Bears with 13 points. Alcock had 11 points. 
  • Junior forward Joleen Lusk (Cherry Valley, N.Y./Cherry Valley-Springfield) led the Red Dragons with 13 points, also recording eight rebounds and two blocks. Senior guard Brooke Tillotson (Marathon, N.Y./Marathon) had 12 points, and junior guard Jackie Funk (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) had 11 points.

The Bears are back in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium tomorrow afternoon, taking on the SUNY Morrisville Mustangs at 2 p.m.
