Bears tame Mustangs, 76-56

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (3-11, 2-5) tamed the SUNY Morrisville Mustangs (1-13, 0-7) 76-56 on Saturday afternoon in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Morrisville opened with a 4-0 run, holding the lead for the first 5:39 of the first quarter. A layup from freshman guard Lucie Scarpine (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore) earned the Bears their first lead of the game at 11-10. There were three lead changes in the quarter. A back-and-forth final 4:13 saw three ties, resulting in a 17-17 scoreline to end the first. Scarpine led the Bears in scoring with seven points. 
  • The Bears had four made buckets in a minute and a half, giving them an early nine-point lead in the second quarter. Senior guard Daelynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River)  racked up four assists. Potsdam took the lead at 8:55 and held it, outscoring Morrisville 21-11 to end the half. The score at halftime was 38-28. Freshman guard Lillian Hoyt (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell) recorded nine points on three 3-pointers. 
  • Another 20-plus point quarter saw Potsdam pull farther ahead of Morrisville, leading by 24 with three minutes to go in the third, spurred by a five and a half minute 12-3 run. Sophomore guard Emily Smith (Greenville, N.Y./Greenville) tallied three assists. Alcock had nine points to bring her game total to 15. Hoyt added six points on two more threes, giving her 15 points. Scarpine also reached double figures with 10. 
  • The Bears' largest lead of the game came in the fourth quarter as they topped the Mustangs by 25 points. Hoyt made a career-high sixth 3-pointer. The game finished 76-56 in favor of Potsdam. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • The Bears outshot the Mustangs 12 to four from the 3-point line. 
  • Potsdam had 44 rebounds to Morrisville's 31, resulting in 17 second-chance points for the Bears and three for the Mustangs. 
  • The Bears assisted on 21 shots. Morrisville had six assists. 
  • Hoyt led all scorers with a career-high 18 points and shot 60-percent from 3-point range. 
  • Alcock finished with 17 points, shooting 54.5-percent from the floor, to go along with six rebounds and six assists. 
  • Freshman Morrisville guard Jessalynn Jones (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) led the Mustangs with 17 points. Junior guard Anyssia Ingersoll (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) had 14. 

WHAT'S NEXT
The Bears head to New Paltz on Friday, January 23, to take on the Hawks at 5:30 p.m. They then face the Oneonta Red Dragons on Saturday, January 24, at 2 p.m.
