Hawks upend Bears

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (3-12, 2-6) fell to SUNY New Paltz (14-2, 8-1) 85-41 on Friday evening. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Potsdam got on the board first, and scoring was fairly even for the first three minutes of the opening quarter, before a 24-7 run put the Hawks ahead. The Bears were held to nine points. 
  • The Bears slowed the Hawks' momentum in the second quarter, allowing only 14 points and scoring 11. The half finished 42-20 in favor of New Paltz. Freshman Bears guard Lucie Scarpine (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore) led Potsdam with six points to end the half. 
  • The Hawks opened the third quarter with a 14-5 run, extending their lead to 31 after five minutes. The Bears went without a bucket for over six minutes until a layup by Scarpine. The score at the end of the quarter was 70-27, as the Bears were held to seven points. 
  • Senior Potsdam guard Paris Jones (Houston, Texas/Dulles) hit a 3-pointer to start the final quarter. The Hawks had their biggest lead of the game at 7:40, going up 46 points, before a 7-0 one-minute run by the Bears, followed by an 11-6 Hawks run to finish the game. The final score was 85-41. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • New Paltz shot 41.6-percent from the field. Potsdam had a 26.0 field-goal percentage. 
  • The Hawks had a slight advantage in rebounding, grabbing 41 boards to Potsdam's 32. 
  • Scarpine was the only Bear in double figures with 10 points, also recording two steals. Freshman guards Olivia Cook (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and Lillian Hoyt (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell) combined for 17 points. 
  • New Paltz's Karly Wittenbauer led all scorers with 17 points. Brianna Fitzgerald recorded a quadruple-double with 15 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, and 11 steals.
