Oneonta pushes past Potsdam

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Oneonta Red Dragons (10-7, 5-5) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (3-13, 2-7) 73-43 on Saturday afternoon.  

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • A strong opening quarter by the Red Dragons saw the Bears held to six points, as Oneonta went on an 18-4 run spanning the last 6:21 of the first, finishing 23-6. Freshman forward Kierra Baxter (Liverpool, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) had four of the Bears' points in the quarter. 
  • Potsdam had 11 points in the second quarter, slowing Oneonta's production to 17. Both teams went on brief runs, with the Red Dragons outscoring the Bears 12-1 before Potsdam returned the favor, going 8-0 to end the half. Baxter led Potsdam with eight points at the break. 
  • A much closer second half saw the Bears outscored 11-15 in the third quarter and 15-18 in the fourth quarter. 
  • Freshman Bears' guard Lucie Scarpine (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore) had nine points in 5:21 in the third quarter. 
  • Oneonta led by at least 30 points through the fourth quarter, claiming the win 73-43. Senior guard Paris Jones (Houston, Texas/Dulles) and senior guard Daelynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) both finished the quarter with seven points. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Potsdam shot 32.6-percent from the field. Oneonta shot 45.9-percent. 
  • The Bears were outrebounded 41-24. 
  • The Red Dragons had a slight advantage on points in the paint with 24 to Potsdam's 20. 
  • Scarpine was the Bears' leading scorer with nine points. Baxter finished with eight points and three steals. 
  • Oneonta's Carlie Young and Lidia Boucher were the only players in double figures with 19 and 18 points, respectively. 

WHAT'S NEXT
The Bears are back in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium on Tuesday, January 27, as they face the Plattsburgh Cardinals at 5:30 p.m.
