Cardinals outlast Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh Cardinals (10-7, 5-5) outlasted the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (3-14, 2-8) 76-61 on Tuesday evening at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Plattsburgh held the lead for most of the opening quarter, finishing 17-12 over Potsdam to end the first. Senior guard DaeLynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) led the Bears with four points. 
  • The Cardinals built up their lead to double digits in the second quarter, with the largest lead of the game being 12. Alcock racked up nine points in under four minutes to become the only Potsdam player in double figures with 13. The Bears cut the lead to seven to end the half, 40-33, thanks to a 3-pointer by freshman forward Kierra Baxter (Liverpool, N.Y./Bishop Grimes). 
  • Opening 3-pointers in the third quarter by freshman guards Olivia Cook (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and Lucie Scarpine (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore) put the Bears within one point of the Cardinals, fueling a 10-0 run that gave Potsdam its first lead of the game. Plattsburgh came back and retook the lead, 55-52, with 0:25 left in the quarter. Scarpine reached double figures with seven points in the third, bringing her total to 14. Baxter became the third Bear in double figures with 10. 
  • The Cardinals extended their lead with a 10-0 run spanning 1:47 to begin the fourth, holding the Bears to three points in the first five minutes of the quarter. Plattsburgh used its momentum to outscore Potsdam 21-9 to close out the game, 76-61. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears shot 39.3-percent from the field. The Cardinals shot 42.4-percent. 
  • Potsdam was outrebounded 33-40. 
  • Scarpine led the Bears with 18 points. Alcock had 17 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and a block. Baxter finished with 10 points and four rebounds. 
  • Plattsburgh sophomore forward Desiree DuBois (Champlain, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton Central) led all scorers with 23 points. Junior guard Julia Greek (Long Island, N.Y./Ward Melville) had 13 assists, seven points, four rebounds, three steals, and a block.

The Bears face Route 11 Rivals SUNY Canton this Friday at 5:30 p.m., and Oswego State, Saturday at 2 p.m., both in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
