Roos upend Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Canton Kangaroos (16-3, 9-3) upended the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (3-15, 2-9) 79-48 on Friday evening in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos opened the contest with an 8-0 run, Potsdam's first bucket coming at 7:17 by senior guard DaeLynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River). Canton outscored Potsdam 24-11 in the quarter. Alcock and freshman guard Lucie Scarpine (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore) were the only Potsdam players with points in the first. Alcock had four points, and Scarpine had seven. 
  • Canton went on an 11-4 run from 6:30 to 2:01 in the second quarter, extending their lead to twenty to end the half. The score at the break was 42-22. Scarpine was the only Bear to reach double figures with 11 points.
  • Freshman Bears' forward Kierra Baxter (Liverpool, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) had the first four points of the second half before a 15-2 run by the Roos gave them their largest lead of the game, going ahead 29 points. Baxter had five of the Bears' nine points in the quarter. 
  • Canton led by 30-plus points for most of the fourth quarter, outscoring Potsdam 22-17. The final score was 79-48. Alock had eight points in the quarter, becoming the second Bear in double figures with 12. Scarpine reached 16 points. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • The Bears shot 23.5-percent from the field. The Roos were 40.4-percent. 
  • Potsdam was outrebounded 51-26. 
  • Scarpine led all scorers with 16 points to go with five rebounds, two steals, and a block. Alcock had 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals. 
  • Sophomore Canton forward Kat McRobbie-Taru (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) was the Roos' leading scorer with 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals, and a block. Junior guard Kate Grainger (Fayetteville, N.Y./Onondaga Community College) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The Bears take on the Oswego State Lakers tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
