Lakers push past Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Oswego State (8-10, 6-6) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (3-16, 2-10) 60-39 on Saturday afternoon in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Lakers got off to a 10-1 start in the opening five minutes of the contest, followed by a three-minute scoring drought for both teams. The first quarter ended 15-4 in favor of Oswego. 
  • Freshman Bears' guard Lucie Scarpine (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore) got Potsdam on the board first in the second quarter. The Lakers stretched their lead to double figures at 6:43, with the largest being 17. The score at halftime was Lakers 27, Bears 13. Scarpine and senior guard DaeLynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) were the only Potsdam players with points in the quarter. 
  • A five-minute 15-4 run in the third quarter extended Oswego's lead to 25 points. Potsdam was outscored 20-8. Scarpine reached eight points in the quarter. Alcock had six. 
  • Potsdam outscored Oswego 18-13 in the fourth quarter. Alcock had seven points in an 11-4 run by the Bears midway through the fourth and finished as the only Potsdam player in double figures with 15. The final score was 60-39, Lakers.   

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Potsdam's field-goal percentage was 26.5-percent. Oswego's was 34.3-percent. 
  • The Lakers had a slight advantage on the boards, grabbing 47 to the Bears' 37. 
  • Alcock was the Bears' leading scorer with 15 points, recording eight rebounds and three blocks. Scarpine had nine points and seven rebounds. 
  • Senior Oswego forward Giavanna White-Principio (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) led all scorers with 19 points and eight rebounds.  

WHAT'S NEXT 
The Bears travel to Morrisville next Friday, February 6, for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off before facing Cortland the following day at 2 p.m.
