Bears rally for tie against Cougars

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (5-6-2) rallied for a 2-2 tie with Chatham University (1-10-2) on Friday evening at Maxcy Ice Arena. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Cougars struck early in the first with a goal from senior forward Chelsea Clark (Calgary, Alberta/Hamline University) in the first minute of the game, assisted by freshman forward Willow Roberts (Anaheim, Calif./San Diego Angels U19AAA). 
  • Junior Bears forward Jalynn Castro (Dexter, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) tied the game five minutes later with an assist from freshman forward Jayne Gamburg (Upper Dublin, Pa./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers). 
  • Potsdam's celebration was short-lived as sophomore defenseman Lily Schmear (Neenah, Wis./Milwaukee Admirals U19AAA) netted Chatham's second goal 20 seconds later. Sophomore forward Isabella Allsopp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Steel City Selects U19AA) and junior forward Hailey Braaten (Albuquerque, N.M./New Mexico Mustangs U19AA) picked up the assists. 
  • The Bears went into the second period down 2-1. 
  • Castro scored her second of the night shortly after the seven-minute mark, assisted by senior forward Rebecca Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles), tying the game. 
  • After a scoreless third period, neither team was able to claim the victory in the 3-on-3 overtime, resulting in a tie. 
  • A best-of-three shoutout was conducted, lasting for six rounds. 
  • Junior defenseman Abby Cunkelman (Blairsville, Pa./New Jersey Titans U19AAA) scored the Cougars' only shootout goal.
  • Senior defenseman Victoria Proulx (Rockland, Ontario/Post University) scored the first for the Bears, and senior forward Isabel Boyd (Norwood, N.Y./Adirondack 46ers) had the decisive goal, earning the shootout win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Potsdam is now 13-5-1 all-time against Chatham. 
  • The Bears outshot the Cougars 48 to 22. 
  • Neither team scored on the power play. Potsdam was 0-for-3, and Chatham was 0-for-4. 
  • Senior goaltender Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec/Les Diablos-Cegép de Trois-Rivières) made 20 saves. 
  • Freshman Cougars' goaltender Morgan Miller (Manchester, Mo./Culver Academy U18AAA) stopped 46 shots.
