Castro slays Cougars in OT, 3-2

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (6-6-2) defeated Chatham University (1-11-2) 3-2 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Ice Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first period, the Cougars struck first with a goal by sophomore forward Klara Miuller (Klapedia, Lithuania/Lithuania National Team) at 5:35 in the second, assisted by sophomore forward Isabella Allsopp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Steel City Selects U19AA).
  • The Bears tied the game as senior forward Alessia Marandola (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Jr. Hornets) scored on the power play less than 10 minutes later. Senior defenseman Victoria Proulx (Rockland, Ontario/Post University) and junior forward Jalynn Castro (Dexter, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) picked up the assists.
  • Miuller put Chatham ahead again late in the third period with assists from senior forward Anabel Lota (Guilford, Conn./The Frederick Gunn School) and sophomore defenseman Lily Schmear (Neenah, Wis./Milwaukee Admirals U19AAA).
  • Freshman forward Coralie Paradis (Montreal, Quebec/Bourget College) ruined the Cougars' celebration, pickpocketing the puck off a Chatham stick and finding the back of the net, tying the game 2-2 with six minutes left in regulation.
  • Overtime was once again necessary, though this time, the Bears got the win thanks to a goal by Castro, her third of the weekend. Junior defenseman Jessika Bullock (Norfolk, N.Y./Adirondack 46ers) had the assist as Potsdam took the 3-2 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
