POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (7-6-2, 2-2-2 SUNYAC) got goals from four different Bears and held off Oswego State (9-7, 3-2) for a 4-3 win on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams battled evenly in the first period until the Bears jumped in front with two goals in a 16-second span.
- SUNYAC Athlete of the Week, junior forward Jalynn Castro (Dexter, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) tucked in an unassisted goal at 10:07 to make it 1-0.
- At 10:23, senior forward Isabel Boyd (Norwood, N.Y./Adirondack 46ers) knocked home a rebound off shot from freshman forward Coralie Paradis (Montreal, Quebec/Bourget College) to make it 2-0.
- At 6:57 of the second period, senior forward Rebeca Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) tipped in a shot from senior defenseman Victoria Proulx (Rockland, Ontario/Post University) at the right point to make it 3-0. Senior captain Rachelle Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) had the second assist.
- The Lakers finally got on the board at 12:36 when junior defenseman Tilly Pethrick (Stratford, Conn./North Mount Hermon) struck. Freshman forward Kayla Dorre (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and sophomore forward Elizabeth Cooley (Rutland, Vt./Lovell Academy) had the assists.
- At 6:39 of the third, senior forward Megan Mills (Mono, Ontario/North York Storm) took the puck the length of the ice and beat Oswego sophomore goalie Mia DeVivo (Plainville, Ill./St. Louis AAA Blues) with a wrister. Junior defenseman Jessika Bullock (Norfolk, N.Y./Adirondack 46ers) had the assist.
- The Lakers decided to gamble and pull DeVivo with at 11:57.
- At 13:33, the Bears were called for a cross check and Oswego took advantage. Sophomore forward Meagan Smith (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Fire AAA) knocked home a loose puck at the right post. Cooley and sophomore defender Shaye Jasiel (Poughquag, N.Y./Millbrook School) earned the assists.
- The Lakers got within one with another empty-netter with just 53.2 seconds remaining. Cooley tipped a shot in the slot to make it 4-3. Jasiel and junior defenseman Helen VanDamme (Pittsford, N.Y./Valley Eagles) had the assists.
- Oswego kept on the pressure with its extra attacker, but couldn't get the equalizer.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Lakers outshot the Bears 43-15.
- Oswego was 1-for-4 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-3.
- Senior captain Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec/Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières) finished with 40 saves for her 13th career win.
- DeVivo made 11 stops.
