Bears hold off Roos 2-1 to complete weekend SUNYAC sweep

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (8-6-2, 3-2-1) held off the SUNY Canton Kangaroos (9-7-1, 1-5-0) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Ice Arena. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears opened scoring with a goal at 5:30 in the first period, courtesy of freshman forward Coralie Paradis (Montreal, Quebec/Bourget College). 
  • Potsdam doubled its lead early in the second period with a goal from senior forward Isabel Boyd (Norwood, N.Y./Adirondack 46ers) as she knocked home the rebound off a shot from freshman forward Jayne Gamburg (Upper Dublin, Pa./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers). Paradis picked up the secondary assist. 
  • The Roos netted a short-handed goal late in the third. Junior forward Chamonix Jackson (Nottingham, Great Britain/Ontario Hockey Academy) was assisted by senior captain Danika Lalonde (Sudbury, Ontario/Barrie Jr. Sharks). 
  • The Bears held Canton to one goal to claim victory, 2-1. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Canton had a slight advantage on shots with 37 to Potsdam's 28. 
  • Potsdam blocked 20 shots. Canton blocked 11. 
  • Neither team was successful on the power play. The Bears were 0-for-4. The Roos were 0-for-5. 
  • Junior Roos' goaltender Molly Lenihan (West Chezzetcook, Nova Scotia/Ontario Hockey Academy) made 26 saves. 
  • Senior Bears' goaltender Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec/Les Diablos-Cegép de Trois-Rivières) had 36 stops to secure the win. 

WHAT'S NEXT 
The Bears are on the road this Tuesday as they take on Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont, at 7 p.m. Next weekend, Potsdam faces SUNY Plattsburgh at Plattsburgh on Friday, January 30, at 4 p.m. and then at home on Saturday the 31st at 3 p.m.
