No. 3 Panthers overpower Bears

MIDDLEBURY, VT. – No. 3 Middlebury College (12-2-3) overpowered the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (8-7-2) 9-1 on Tuesday evening. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Potsdam struck first with a goal by junior forward Jalynn Castro (Dexter, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) at 5:19 in the opening period. Senior forwards Rebecca Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) and Alessia Marandola (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Jr. Hornets) picked up the assists. 
  • Middlebury responded with three goals in less than four minutes. 
  • Rachel Neyman had the game-tying goal at 7:40. Twenty seconds later, Trinity Walsh put the Panthers ahead 2-1. 
  • At 11:17 in the first, Olivia Gordon added another for Middlebury. 
  • The Panthers had three goals in the second period, with Sarah Anthony scoring the fourth less than two minutes in. Alyssa Frazier netted a fifth goal on the power play. Walsh scored Middlebury's sixth goal, her second of the game. 
  • Two goals in seven seconds put Middlebury up 8-1 three minutes into the third period. Adrienne Hall scored the seventh. Avery McInerny added the eighth. 
  • Five minutes later, Caroline Thomas put the Panthers ahead 9-1.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Potsdam was outshot 85-32. 
  • The Bears were 0-for-1 on the power play. The Panthers were 1-for-2. 
  • Potsdam blocked 14 shots, and Middlebury blocked eight. 
  • Sophomore Bears' goaltender Maddy Ferguson (Medicine Hat, Alberta/South Alberta Hockey Academy) made 30 saves (.833) and allowed six goals in 34:21. Senior goaltender Magalie Parent stopped 18 shots (.857), allowing three goals in 25:39. 
  • Middlebury goalie Lauren Sobczak had 15 saves (.938) and allowed one goal in 41:30. Bridget Gray faced two shots (1.000) in 18:30. 

WHAT'S NEXT 
The Bears face No. 15 Plattsburgh in Plattsburgh this Friday at 4 p.m. and at Maxcy Ice Arena the next afternoon at 3 p.m.
