Cortland tops Bears, 65-55

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (10-4, 6-1 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-12, 1-5) 65-55 on Friday night in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cortland opened the contest on a 9-0 run and led 22-7 at the 8:18 mark of the first half.
  • The Bears answered with an 18-10 stretch of their own and trailed just 32-25 at the break. Junior captain Ethan Baksh (Queens, N.Y./Richmond Hill) had 10 points in the opening 20 minutes.
  • The Red Dragons used a 12-6 run to start the second half, building a 44-31 edge.
  • An 8-0 response from Potsdam, on buckets by four different Bears, closed the gap to 44-39 at 10:47.
  • After another short Cortland burst, Potsdam again answered with a 7-2 run to get within 51-46. Freshman forward Landon Cox (Dickinson Center, N.Y./Brushton-Moira) had a three during the stretch.
  • The Red Dragons kept Potsdam at bay the rest of the contest with a 14-9 finish.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Cortland outshot the Bears 38.6-percent to 36.2.
  • The Red Dragons finished with a 47-27 advantage on the glass.
  • Baksh finished with 15 points and four rebounds to tie for the game-high.
  • Freshman guard Bobby Kemokai (New Brunswick, N.J./Plattsburgh) scored 10 points and grabbed four boards for the Bears.
  • Senior forward Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson, N.Y./Rondout Valley) led Cortland with 15 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.
  • Senior guard Isaiah Austin (Albany, N.Y./Albany) just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine boards for the Red Dragons.
  • Freshman guard Nolan Raymond (Queens Village, Vt./Vermont Academy) rounded out Cortland's leaders with 11 points and five rebounds.
