POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (7-9-1, 4-5-1 SUNYAC) rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie SUNY Canton (7-9-1, 3-6-1) 3-3 on Friday evening in Maxcy Ice Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears took the lead just 1:01 into the contest. Senior captain Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals) banked the puck off the skate of Kangaroos junior goalie Trey Miller (Columbus, Ohio/Twin City Thunder) and in to make it 1-0. Sophomore forward Owen Watson (Smiths Falls, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears) had the assist.
- Canton tied the game at 8:46 with a power-play goal. Sophomore forward Logan Kelly (Cobourg, Ontario/Cobourg Cougars) scored on a one-timer from the high slot. Senior defenseman Scott Cremen (Arnold, Md./Team Maryland) and freshman forward Spencer Sasenbury (Fayetteville, N.Y./Watertown Shamrocks) picked up the assists.
- The Roos grabbed the lead with another power-play goal at 1:28 of the second period. Senior forward Evan Pringle (Aurora, Ontario/Oakville Blades) scored with an assist from Cremen.
- Pringle struck again at 3:06 with helpers from freshman forward Colton Alexander (Cochrane, Alberta/Neepawa Titans) and junior forward Niko Schoner (Bloomingdale, N.Y./Nashville Spartans).
- Senior forward Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Junior Islanders) got Potsdam back within 3-2 at 5:48 of the second with assists from Watson and junior assistant captain Eli Doughart-Wood (St. Louis, Mo./Navan Grads).
- At 12:33, sophomore forward Andrew Blanchard (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Pennsylvania Huntsmen) knocked home a rebound off a shot from sophomore forward Garrett McCabe (London, Ontario/Brantford 99ers) to tie the game. Junior forward Will O'Brien (Jefferson Hills, Pa./HC Rhode Island) had the other assist.
- The shots were 15-15 in the third period, but Bears junior goalie Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) and Miller didn't allow another goal.
- Canton edged Potsdam 3-2 in shots in overtime, but the contest ended in a tie.
- The Bears edged Canton 2-1 in the shootout on goals from Mahlmeister and sophomore forward Finnegan Kilmurray (Ottawa, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Canton outshot Potsdam 36-35.
- The Roos were 2-for-4 on the power play and the Bears went 0-for-4.
- Perno finished with 33 saves and Miller had 32 stops.
