OSWEGO, N.Y.—Fourth-ranked Oswego State (14-2-2, 11-1 SUNYAC) struck early en route to a 9-3 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (7-10-1, 4-6-1) on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Brandon Cohen opened the scoring just 2:30 into the contest. Jesse Horacek had the assist.
- At the 5:55 mark of the first period, Cam Symons made it 2-0 with an assist from Brendan Gilmore.
- Tommy Banister added a third goal at 12:48. Gilmore and Jonathan Balah picked up the assists.
- Colin Vassallo finished a feed from Balah at 13:09 to make it 4-0.
- Vassallo added a power-play goal at 18:51 and the Lakers led 5-0 after 20 minutes. Connor Gatto and Travis Baker assisted on the goal.
- Senior captain Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals) got the Bears on the board with a goal just 51 seconds into the second period. Sophomore forward Owen Watson (Smiths Falls, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears) and junior defenseman Rocco Seery (Bloomingdale, Ill./East Coast Wizards) picked up the assists.
- However, Oswego countered just 58 seconds later on a marker from Drake Semrad to make it 6-1 on helpers Ryan Burke and Justin Ryan.
- Watson netted the Bears' second goal at 11:56 on a feed from freshman defenseman Zdenek Dobes (Ostrava, Czech Republic/Lonestar Brahmas) had the assists.
- Ryan answered for the Lakers at 15:40 for a 7-2 lead with an assist from Semrad.
- Burke scored on the power play just 1:14 into the third period with assists from Vassallo and Gatto.
- At 8:12, Michael Urgo scored the Lakers' ninth and final goal on a feed from Brett Fudger.
- Bears senior assistant captain Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario/Jersey Whalers) notched the Bears' third goal to close the scoring at 10:27. Senior forward Payton Felix (De Peyster, N.Y./Northeast Generals) earned the final assist.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Lakers outshot the Bears 47-17.
- Oswego was 2-for-5 on the power play and Potsdam went 0-for-2.
- Bears junior goalie Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Rochester Generals) allowed four goals and made nine saves in the contest's first 13:09. Sophomore Luciano Chinappi (Hilton, N.Y. / Boston Jr. Rangers) allowed five goals and made 29 saves in the final 46:51 for Potsdam.
- Brandon Milberg picked up the win for the Lakers with 14 stops.
