No. 15 Cardinals blank Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (8-9-2, 3-4-1) was blanked by No. 15 Plattsburgh State (12-6-0, 7-1-0) 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Ice Arena. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals had a trio of goals in the opening period, with the first coming at 2:25, scored by junior forward Sydnee Francis (Canton, N.Y./Nepean Jr. Wildcats) and assisted by sophomore forward Kate Conlon (New Hudson, Mich./Little Caesars). 
  • Plattsburgh doubled its lead three minutes later through sophomore forward Tessa Morris (Grand Island, N.Y./Rome Girl's hockey). Francis and senior defenseman Su-an Cho (Madison, Ala./Florida Alliance) had the assists. 
  • Freshman forward Zoe Puc (West Palm Beach, Fla./Florida Alliance) netted the third for the Cardinals with one second left in the period, assisted by junior forward Emily Kasprzak (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) and junior defenseman Maeghan Forsyth (Billings, Mont./Notre Dame Hounds). 
  • Senior Bears' goaltender Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec/Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières) made 12 saves in the first period. 
  • Plattsburgh added two more in the second period. 
  • Puc got her second of the night, assisted by senior forward Molly Riggi (Farmingdale, N.J./New Jersey Titans) and freshman forward Riley Keller (Cuba, N.Y./Nichols School) at 4:08. 
  • Sophomore forward Brooke Terry (Massena, N.Y./Nazareth University) made it 5-0 for the Cardinals at the end of the second. Freshman defenseman Lauren Farris (Northville, Mich./Belle Tire) and Kasprzak picked up the assists. 
  • Potsdam sophomore goaltender Maddy Ferguson (Medicine Hat, Alberta/S. Alberta Hockey Academy) made 11 saves to keep the third period scoreless. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • The Bears were outshot 30 to 14. 
  • Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play. 
  • Parent stopped 13 shots and allowed five goals in 37:40. Ferguson made 12 saves, allowing no goals in 22:20. 
  • Plattsburgh sophomore goaltender Maddy Stetson (Wasilla, Alaska/Little Caesars) turned aside 14 shots in the contest.

The Bears are on the road next weekend as they face William Smith on Friday, February 6, at 3 p.m. and Buffalo State on Saturday, February 7, also at 3 p.m.
