Bears rally past Herons in OT, 2-1

GENEVA, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (9-9-2, 4-4-1) defeated William Smith College (9-10-0, 5-3-0) 2-1 in overtime on Friday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Potsdam goaltender Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec/Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières) made 15 saves in the goalless opening period. 
  • The Herons got on the board first, halfway through the second period, with a power-play goal from Laine Heiser, assisted by Finley Crosby and Kelly Howe. 
  • Freshman Bears' forward Marissa Whiteside (Long Sault, Ontario/Cornwall Lady Royals) netted the tying goal unassisted at 5:17 in the third period. 
  • Potsdam outshot William Smith 13 to five in the third. 
  • The Bears scored the game-winner two minutes into overtime, courtesy of junior defenseman Jessika Bullock (Norfolk, N.Y./Adirondack 46ers). Senior forward Isabel Boyd (Norwood, N.Y./Adirondack 46ers) had the assist. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • The Bears had a slight advantage in shots with 37 to the Herons' 31. 
  • Potsdam was 0-for-6 on the power play. William Smith was 1-for-2. 
  • Parent stopped 30 shots in the contest. 
  • Herons' goaltender Mia Twicki had 35 saves. 

WHAT'S NEXT 
The Bears take the ice against the Buffalo State Bengals tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Buffalo.
