Bengals edge Bears, 4-2

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (9-10-2, 4-5-1) was defeated 4-2 by the Buffalo State Bengals (11-8-1, 3-6-0) on Saturday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • After a scoreless opening period, the Bears netted the first goal of the game on the power play at 1:57 in the second period. Senior forward Alessia Marandola (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Jr. Hornets) scored, with assists from senior defenseman Elise Clifford (Auburn, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) and senior forward Rebecca Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles). 
  • Potsdam held the lead for eight minutes before Buffalo State's Madison Mallone tied the game, assisted by Grace Zwolak. 
  • The Bengals went ahead 2-1 five seconds into the third period courtesy of Sydney Radecki on the power play. Sage Running Rabbit picked up the assist. 
  • Bears' junior forward Jalynn Castro (Dexter, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) tied the game at 7:50 in the third, unassisted. 
  • Buffalo State added a third late in the third as Emma Ramseier scored, assisted by Quinn Murray and Kaylee Cadez. 
  • The Bengals scored an empty netter with 15 seconds left in the game. Taylor Masterson had the goal, and Arissa Vettraino had the assist. The final score was 4-2. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Buffalo State outshot Potsdam 36-29. 
  • The Bears were 1-for-6 on the power play. The Bengals were 1-for-5. 
  • Senior Bears' goaltender Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec/Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières) made 32 saves in the contest. 
  • Buffalo State goaltender Alexa Todd had 27 saves.

The Bears travel to Route 11 Rivals Canton next Friday, February 13, at 7 p.m., and to Oswego State on Saturday, February 14, at 3 p.m.
