Lakers pull away from Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Oswego State (16-3, 10-2 SUNYAC) used a late run to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-18, 1-11) 90-79 on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team led by more than five points in the first half, which saw five lead changes.  
  • The Lakers opened up a 15-10 lead at 13:33 and looked as if they might pull away. Sophomore guard Mike Hancock (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) answered with a 3-pointer and Potsdam clawed its way back.
  • Down 20-15 at 7:35, the Bears answered with a 15-9 run, capped by a Hancock layup to give Potsdam a 30-29 edge. A three from junior captain Matthew Szymanski (New York, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) put the Bears in front 33-31. Sophomore guard Timothy Hardy (Portsmouth, Va./Ocean Lakes) sank a three with 30 seconds left and Potsdam trailed 37-36 at the break.
  • The Bears opened the final 20 minutes with a 14-8 run and led 50-45 at 12:52. Freshman forward Landon Cox (Dickinson Center, N.Y./Brushton-Moira) scored six of the points.
  • Oswego finally got its offense rolling with a 29-9 burst to take control of the contest, 74-59 at 4:58.
  • A Hardy layup got Potsdam back within 77-69, but the Bears couldn't get any closer.  
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears shot 42.4-percent from the floor to Oswego's 41.8.
  • The Lakers doubled up the Potsdam on the glass 50-26.
  • Hancock led the Bears with 25 points and completed his double-double with 12 rebounds.
  • Hardy and Cox both posted career-highs with 21 and 18 points, respectively.
  • Junior guard Jayson McGhee (New Rochelle, N.Y./Herkimer C.C.) led all scorers with 27 points for the Lakers.
