FREDONIA, N.Y.—SUNY Fredonia (3-18, 3-11 SUNYAC) used a last second layup to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's Basketball team (1-21, 1-14) 79-78 on Friday night in Fredonia.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears opened the contest on an 11-2 run. Potsdam had five field goals from five different players, including a three from freshman Bobby Kemokai (New Brunswick, N.Y./Plattsburgh).
- After Fredonia had closed to within 14-11, Potsdam used a 16-6 burst to grab a 30-17 lead at 6:10. Sophomore guard Mike Hancock (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) scored eight of the points and senior guard Jaylen Singh (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Rockvale) had six.
- The Blue Devils finished the half on a 14-8 run but trailed 38-31 at the break.
- Two free throws early in the second half gave Potsdam a 45-35 lead, but Fredonia answered with a 10-5 run to close the gap to five.
- A 10-4 run gave the Bears their biggest lead of the half, 76-65, with 3:27 to play.
- Fredonia closed to within 78-77 with six seconds left and then forced a turnover. A Martin Garza layup with a second remaining proved to be the difference in the 79-78 decision.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Blue Devils shot a scorching 50-percent from the floor to the Bears' strong 48.3.
- Potsdam outrebounded Fredonia 34-29.
- Hancock led all scorers with 26 points to go with seven boards and six assists.
- Sophomore guard Timothy Hardy (Portsmouth, Va./Ocean Lakes) scored 17, while Singh finished with 11 and junior guard Bryson Brown (New York, N.Y./Mercersburg) had 10.
- Garza paced the Blue Devils with 23 points, five rebounds and two steals. Ethan Sokolowski contributed 16 points and seven rebounds.
