Bears tame Bengals, 68-60

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (5-18, 4-12) tamed the Buffalo State Bengals (4-19, 3-13) 68-60 on Saturday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • A back-and-forth opening quarter ended 15-13 in favor of the Bears. Five different Potsdam players had points in the quarter, with freshman guard Olivia Cook (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) leading the team with five. 
  • The Bengals had an early four-point lead in the second quarter, but senior guard Paris Jones (Houston, Texas/Dulles) scored six points in four minutes to tie the game at 22-22 halfway through. Potsdam reclaimed the lead, closing out the half with an 8-3 run. The score at the break was 30-25. Cook reached seven points in the quarter. Jones and senior guard DaeLynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) finished the half with six. 
  • The Bears began the third quarter with a 10-4 run, giving them their first double-digit lead of the contest. The Bengals used a 14-3 run to tie the game at 46, outscoring the Bears 21-16 in the third. With seven points in the quarter, Cook was the first Potsdam player in double figures at 14 points. Alcock recorded six points in the quarter, bringing her total to 12.
  • In the final quarter, Potsdam outscored Buffalo State 22-14, earning the 68-60 victory. Alcock racked up 11 points in the quarter. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • There were six ties and nine lead changes in the contest. 
  • Potsdam outshot Buffalo State from the field, shooting 47.8-percent to the Bengals' 29.0-percent. 
  • Potsdam had 32 points in the paint. Buffalo State had 14. 
  • Rebounding was fairly even at 32-33 in favor of the Bengals.
  • Each team had 14 assists. 
  • Alcock led all scorers and recorded a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Cook finished with 17 points. Jones had 11 points, five assists, and two steals. 
  • Emily Delisle and Tania Tyler-Wilson were the Bengals' leading scorers with 13 points and three steals apiece.

WHAT'S NEXT 
The Bears return home next weekend, taking on Oneonta on Bear Pride Night, Friday, February 20, at 5:30 p.m., and New Paltz on Saturday, February 21, at 2 p.m. for Senior Day.
