Soaring Eagles down Bears in five, 3-2

ELMIRA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's volleyball team (3-2) took set one and set four before falling in five at Elmira College (8-3), 3-2 on Friday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears outlasted the Soaring Eagles 26-24 in a back-and-forth set one. Graduate student middle hitter Matt Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) had three kills and junior middle hitter Jack Orrange (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) and senior outside hitter Duncan Tenhagen (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) each had two.
  • Elmira took set two, 25-22. Freshman setter Shane Goldberg (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) led the Bears with six kills, while Tenhagen added four.
  • The Soaring Eagles grabbed a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-21 win in set three. Matt Kilinski registered four more kills and Tenhagen had two.
  • On the brink, Potsdam held off a late Elmira charge in set four to win 26-24. Matt Kilinski had five more kills and senior middle hitter Mike Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) contributed three.
  • The Soaring Eagles used a 5-1 run in set five to take a 7-3 lead before closing out the match with a 15-8 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Matt Kilinski led the Bears with 18 kills, two aces and two blocks. Tenhagen had 14 kills and two aces. Goldberg had a career-high nine kills and three blocks. Mike Kilinski recorded six kills, two blocks and five digs.
  • Junior setter Alex Lombardo (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) totaled a season-high 47 assists to go with five digs.
  • Freshman libero Rowan Root (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) chipped in nine digs and an assist.
  • Gabriel Staron paced the Soaring Eagles with 21 kills.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears play in a tri-match at Hilbert College tomorrow. They face Hartwick College at 2 p.m. and the host Hawks at 4 p.m.
