Bears sweep Hilbert Tri-Match

HAMBURG, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's volleyball team (5-2) defeated Harwick College (3-14) 3-0 and Hilbert College (3-10) 3-1 in a Saturday tri-match at Hilbert.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (HARTWICK)
  • Midway through set one, the Bears pulled away from the Hawks for a 25-12 win. Senior outside hitter Duncan Tenhagen (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) had three kills and freshman right side Brayden Kilinski (Greenfield Center, Saratoga Springs) and senior middle hitter Mike Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) each had two.
  • In set two, Potsdam used a 7-1 run to break an 18-18 tie and claim a 25-19 win. Mike Kilinski had three more kills and freshman setter Shane Goldberg (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) added two.
  • Set three was tightly contested with Harwick getting within 22-21 before the Bears reeled off three straight points to take the sweep.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (HARTWICK)
  • Tenhagen led Potsdam with seven kills, an ace and a block.
  • Mike Kilinski registered six kills along with a career-high six blocks
  • Brayden Kilinski had five kills, while Matt Kilinski posted three kills, two aces and nine digs.
  • Junior setter Alex Lombardo (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) totaled 24 assists and seven digs, while freshman libero Rowan Root (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institutes) contributed a match-best 14 digs.
  • Anthony Ruggiero led Hartwick with 10 kills and seven digs.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (HILBERT)
  • The Bears used a 7-1 run to erase a 20-18 deficit and take set one 25-21. Tenhagen punished Hilbert with eight kills, while Matt Kilinski had six and Mike Kilinski added four.
  • Potsdam started quickly and ran away for a 25-14 set two win. Tenhagen had five more kills in the set.
  • The Hawks edged the Bears 25-23 in set three. Tenhagen led the way again with five kills, while junior middle hitter Jack Orrange (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) had four.
  • Potsdam ran away with set four, 25-13, wrapping up the match victory. Nine more kills from Tenhagen and six from Matt Kilinski slammed the door on Hilbert.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Tenhagen's match-best 27 kills were just two shy of his career-high and the most by a Bear in a four-set match. Matt Kilinski finished with 16 kills and 14 digs. Mike Kilinski totaled eight kills and two blocks.
  • Lombardo had an outstanding 55 assists, six short of his program record. He also had 10 digs and a block.
  • Root had career-high 17 digs and two blocks.
  • Nikolas D'Andrea led Hilbert with 18 kills, six digs, an ace and a block.
  • Matt Kilinski is now second in kills in program history with 734. He's in hot pursuit of Bears record holder Tenhagen, who is now up to 776.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears are back in action next Saturday, when they head to SUNY Poly for a tri-match with the NEVC foe Wildcats and another matchup with Hilbert.
