Bears bow to Wildcats, sweep Hawks at SUNY Poly Tri-Match

UTICA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's volleyball team (6-3, 1-1 NEVC) fell to host SUNY Poly (14-9, 1-1 NEVC) 3-1 and swept Hilbert College (3-13) 3-0 at the SUNY Poly Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (SUNY POLY)
  • The teams traded runs in set one but the Wildcats hung on for a 25-23 win. Junior middle hitter Duncan Tenhagen (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca) had five kills and graduate student middle hitter Matt Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) had three.
  • SUNY Poly used a 7-2 run in set two to take a 21-15 lead and held on for a 25-21 victory. Freshman right side Brayden Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) registered four kills and Tenhagen had three more.
  • The Bears flattened the Wildcats in set three, 25-15. Tenhagen had five kills, while Matt and Brayden Kilinski added three apiece.
  • SUNY Poly built a 14-9 lead and stayed just out in front of Potsdam to clinch the victory with a 25-18 set four. Matt Kilinski provided six kills and Tenhagen finished with four more.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (SUNY POLY)
  • Tenhagen had a match best 17 kills as well as an ace and nine digs. With the performance, he claimed the program digs record, topping Zaire Rogers' previous mark of 581.
  • Matt Kilinski contributed 13 kills, two aces and nine digs. Brayden Kilinski finished with seven kills and two aces.
  • Junior setter Alex Lombardo (East Hampden, N.Y./East Hampton) recorded 36 assists and four blocks.
  • Freshman libero Rowan Root (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) posted 16 digs and four assists.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (HILBERT)
  • Potsdam used a 9-5 burst to put away the Hawks in set one, 25-17. Junior right side Benson Jovel-Truong (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) led the way with six kills, while Tenhagen had five and junior outside hitter Calum Anderson (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) had three.
  • Hilbert surged midway through set two with a 9-1 run, but the Bears rallied to take the 26-24 victory. Tenhagen had five kills and Brayden Kilinski added four.
  • The Hawks opened set three up 5-0, but Potsdam finished it with a 14-5 run to complete the sweep with a 25-21 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (HILBERT)
  • Tenhagen had another 14 kills, three aces, a block and six digs.
  • Jovel-Truong finished with a career-high 10 kills and Brayden Kilinski chipped in another seven kills.
  • Lombardo had 21 more assists, while freshman setter Shane Goldberg (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) registered a personal-best 15 assists.
  • Root had 10 digs and Anderson added eight more.
 
RECORDS
  • Tenhagen has upped his program kills record to 807 and his digs record to 591.
  • Matt Kilinski has the Bears second most kills with 751.
  • Lombardo has increased his program's assist mark to 1356.
