Bears fall in heartbreaker to Nichols on Senior Day, 3-2

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's volleyball team (6-4, 1-2 NEVC) raced out to a 2-0 lead on defending NEVC Champ Nichols College (10-8, 3-0) before falling in five sets. Prior to the start of the contest, the Bears honored graduate student middle hitter Matt Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), senior middle hitter Mike Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), senior outside hitter Duncan Tenhagen (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) and senior outside hitter Dylan Murray (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) for their careers on Senior Day.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears opened up a 9-5 lead in set one and cemented the win with a 6-0 run to grab a 16-8 advantage before closing out the 25-17 win. Freshman right side Brayden Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), Matt Kilinski, Tenhagen and junior middle hitter Jack Orrange (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) each had two kills.
  • Potsdam pulled away from the Bison midway through the second set, winning 25-19. Mike Kilinski had four more kills and Orrange added three.
  • A 4-0 run by Nichols in the third set proved to be enough to stay alive as the Bison claimed a 25-20 win. Mike Kilinski registered another four kills and Tenhagen had three.
  • Set four went to the wire with Nichols holding off Potsdam 25-23 and evening the match at 2-2. Mike Kilinski led the Bears again with four kills. Matt Kilinski chipped in two.
  • A 6-1 run in set five gave Potsdam an 8-6 lead but the Bears couldn't shake the Bison. Potsdam then held a 13-10 edge, but Nichols rattled off five straight points to take the set and the match. Mike Kilinski totaled two kills in the set.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Mike Kilinski finished with a career-high 16 kills to go with two aces and four blocks. Tenhagen had 10 kills ands two aces. Matt Kilinski also totaled 10 kills along with two aces and 10 digs.
  • Junior setter Alex Lombardo (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) posted 45 assists, 12 digs, two kills and a block.  
  • Freshman libero Rowan Root (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) just missed a personal best with 15 digs.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Adam Vincent (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) paced the Bison with a match-best 18 kills and 16 digs.
  • Sophomore setter Evan Sachs (Long Island, N.Y./Commack) contributed a contest-best 58 assists for Nichols.
 
RECORDS WATCH
  • Tenhagen extended his program kills record to 817 and Matt Kilinski stayed in pursuit, upping his total to 761.
  • Lombardo's assists mark now sits at 1446.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears are back in action in one week when they host Russell Sage College at 1 p.m. in another crucial NEVC contest.
