Bears sweep Gators for NEVC win, 3-0

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's volleyball team (7-4, 2-2 NEVC) swept Russell Sage College (7-14, 1-3) 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears used an 18-11 surge to take set one 25-17. Graduate student middle hitter Matt Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) had four kills and senior outside hitter Duncan Tenhagen (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) added three.
  • The Bears took the lead in set two for good with a 5-0 run that made it 10-6. They went on to the 25-21 victory. Matt Kilinski had another five kills, while Tenhagen and senior middle hitter Mike Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) each had four.
  • The Gators built leads of 18-14 and 20-17 in set three, but Potsdam charged back for a 25-23 win to clinch the match. Matt Kilinski capped his day with five more kills, while freshman setter Shane Goldberg (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) recorded four and Tenhagen had three.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Matt Kilinski paced the Bears with 15 kills. Tenhagen had 10 kills, seven digs and an ace. Mike Kilinski finished with eight kills, two aces, two blocks and two assists.
  • Junior setter Alex Lombardo (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) had a match-best 34 assists, to go with six digs and a block.
  • Freshman libero Rowan Root (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate) contributed eight digs.
  • Senior outside hitter Sean Pingelski (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) led Russell Sage with 10 kills.
  • Tenhagen has extended his program kills record to 827 for his career, while Matt Kilinski has closed to within 776.
  • Lombardo has raised his program assists record to 1435.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears head for Massachusetts next weekend. They face Curry College in a nonconference matchup on Friday at 7 p.m. On Saturday, they battle Endicott College at 1 p.m. in a critical NEVC contest.
