Bears demote Colonels in NEVC matchup, 3-0

MILTON, MASS.—The SUNY Potsdam men's volleyball team (8-4, 3-2 NEVC) swept Curry College (11-12, 1-4) 3-0 in NEVC play on Friday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Colonels used a 9-3 run to take a 17-12 lead in set one, but the Bears surged back with a 13-6 burst to take a 25-23 win. Graduate student middle hitter Matt Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) led the comeback with eight kills.
  • The teams traded leads in the middle of set two, but Potsdam again made a late run to take a 25-22 win. Senior outside hitter Duncan Tenhagen (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) had three kills, while Matt Kilinski and freshman setter Shane Goldberg (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) each added two.
  • The Bears pulled away early in the third set and went on to a 25-21 victory to complete the sweep. Matt Kilinski did most of the damage with another eight kills.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Matt Kilinski finished 18 kills and two blocks. Senior middle hitter Mike Kilinski (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) contributed seven kills and five blocks. Tenhagen had five kills, three aces and three blocks.
  • Junior setter Alex Lombardo (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) registered 32 assists and 10 digs.
  • Goldberg posted eight digs and an ace and freshman libero Rowan Root (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) had nine digs.
  • Tenhagen's program kills record is now at 832 and his program service ace record has reached 125. Matt Kilinski is nearing 800 kills with 794.
  • Lombardo's Potsdam assist record has reached 1467.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears head to Endicott College tomorrow at 1 p.m. for another critical NEVC contest.
