Red Dragons hold off Bears, 3-2

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Cortland Red Dragons (11-10-1, 8-6-1) held off the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (7-12-2, 4-8-2) 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Ice Arena. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Bears got on the scoresheet first with one second to go in the opening period. Junior forward Jakub Hall (Anchorage, Alaska/Richmond Generals) netted the goal, with assists from senior forward Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals) and junior defenseman Eli Doughart-Wood (St. Louis, Mo./Navan Grads). 
  • The Red Dragons responded with three goals in the second period. 
  • Sophomore Cortland defenseman Dino Mannetta (Wading River, N.Y./P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) tied the game 1-1, unassisted. 
  • A minute later, sophomore forward Garrett Krieger (Skaneateles, N.Y./Utica Jr. Comets) put the Red Dragons ahead. Sophomore forward Justin Legault (Oakville, Ontario/Burlington Cougars) had the assist. 
  • Senior forward Colby Seitz (Eden, N.Y./Corpus Christi IceRays) added a third for Cortland at 11:59, assisted by freshman forward JC Humphreys (Canonsburg, Pa./Rochester Jr. Americans) and sophomore forward Sam Christiano (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres). 
  • With an extra attacker on the ice, senior Bears' forward Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) scored with a minute left in the game. Sophomore forward Owen Watson (Smiths Falls, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears) picked up the assist. 


INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • The Red Dragons had a slight advantage in shots with 29 to the Bears' 27. 
  • Neither team was successful on the power play, with Potsdam going 0-for-4 and Cortland 0-for-6. 
  • Junior Bears' goaltender Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) stopped 26 shots in the contest. 
  • Cortland goalie Nolan Suggs had 25 saves.

The Bears travel to SUNY Fredonia next Friday, February 13, at 7 p.m., and Buffalo State on Saturday, February 14, at 4 p.m.
