Cortland outlasts Potsdam

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The SUNY Cortland Red Dragons (18-3, 13-1) outlasted the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (4-17, 3-11) 65-40 on Saturday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The opening quarter of the contest saw three lead changes in the first five and a half minutes. A pair of 3-pointers by Cortland put them ahead 14-7 to end the quarter. Freshman Bears' guard Lucie Scarpine (Angola, N.Y./Lake Shore) had three points. Sophomore guard Rachel LaRock (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon) and senior guard DaeLynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) each had two points. 
  • The Bears kept the Red Dragons from stretching their lead in the first half of the second quarter as each team added eight points to their totals. Cortland had an 8-2 run to end the half, going up by 13 points. The score at the break was 30-17. Alcock had eight of Potsdam's 10 points in the quarter, bringing her total to 10. 
  • The Red Dragons extended their lead to 20 on a 10-3 run with five minutes left in the third quarter. The Bears were outscored 18-10 in the quarter. Freshman guard Olivia Cook (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) had four points in the third. 
  • Potsdam kept the quarter close, being outscored 17-13. Cortland's largest lead was 30 points with 3:50 left in the game. The final score was 65-40 in favor of the Red Dragons. Alcock had 11 points in eight minutes. Junior guard Sara Richards (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./AuSable Valley) had the other two points for the Bears. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • The Red Dragons had a slight advantage on field goal percentage, shooting 36.2-percent to the Bears' 33.3-percent. 
  • Potsdam was outrebounded 46-22. 
  • The Bears had five blocks in the contest. The Red Dragons had two. 
  • Alcock led all scorers and was the only Bear in double figures with 21 points. She had six rebounds and three blocks in the contest. 
  • Cortland's Brooke Tillotson recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Jackie Funk had 11 points for the Red Dragons.

The Bears travel to Fredonia next Friday, February 13, at 5:30 p.m., and Buffalo State on Saturday, February 14, at 2 p.m.
